MEMBERS of Evesham Round Table dropped in on Evesham Rowing Club on Saturday to see how their latest donation was being put to good use.
The Round Table recently gave the rowing club a new training boat - a Virus single trailer - worth £1,700, which enables children, especially
the club’s juniors under the age of 13, to try the sport and gain confidence on the water before moving to finer, less stable, boats. The boat is also ideal for children and young adults with disabilities, giving them the
chance to try the sport in a boat that is virtually impossible to capsize, and junior coaches from Evesham RC and
Round Table members were able to see it in action at the weekend. Table chairman Glen Lyon said: “The rowing club is such a visible feature of the town and Evesham Round Table admire the way they have coped through the flood of 2007.
“The addition of this training boat will allow a wider group of children to try the sport. We have all seen the success of our Olympians and Paralympians at the recent Games in Beijing. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if this very boat could help start a future medal winner’s career?”
The boat has been a valuable addition to the rowing club fleet said junior rowing coordinator Jane Sullivan. She added: “We have just taken on 15 new junior rowers and all of them have used the training boat. It is great to be able to get children out on the water in their first session and actually rowing without them having to worry that they will fall in the river. “We are really grateful to the Round Table for this donation as we wouldn’t have been able to fund this boat otherwise.” Further details of the Round Table, with details of the annual Santa Sleigh collections, are available at www.Evesham295.com.
